  Crappy Mahjong

Went for DnD recce today.... the place is quite nice.... have the kampung feeling, which is what the in-charge emphasized abt:- u can't find this in the city! Think tt its a good venue for dinner.... not those posh kind of dinner, but a dinner which would be unique.

After the recce, Jo, Jade, HY, Ruldoph, su su and yz came to my house to play mahjong. Hahahahaaha.... its been a long time since i play a mahjong game tt is so entertaining... we were really crapping and crapping and crapping.... the mahjong game is really secondary to me; its the company tt counts.

I have to apologise to Jo though.... i think she must be feeling quite bored watching us play mahjong the whole day.... sry jo!! didnt get to watch the lord of the ring dvd!

  Burp!

Blk 85 dinner today! Woah... eat a lot ah.... so much variety, and still the price is quite ok..... hehe, hawker center food still the best! cheap!

Didnt really manage a decent conversation with any of the ppl there.... partly bec it is so many ppl. But it was funny listening to KS and SXi discussing things of sexual connotation; crapping with hy, with he suaning me and i suaning him back; poking aud a few times =P; and a very brief chat with MI abt psy stuff and what she intend to do.

Really manage to get a decent chat with HJ and Huat on the bus ride home.

It started with the topic abt education... then it divert on to various issues in life.

Some of the things which strikes me during the conversation:-

1) We need to have backup plans for emergencies. I have always believe that a family can survive with 2k+ of income, if they are contented with the lifestyle. Becos my family have always survive with tt amt of money, i think its possible to have a decent standard of living. But HJ pointed out tt when the family has an emergency, the amt of money is not enugh.
Makes me realised tt my family is extremely fortunate becos there are few incidents of accidents.... which sorta explain why we can survive with 2k income.

Lesson--- 2k+ income is only enugh when all is well. Will need to invest and have savings for rainy days

2) HJ talked abt how widely he read... from psy, to sociology, to geography..... I think its necessary to read widely even read things from other disciplines. The broad based education approach in NUS make me realise tt the basics of all disciplines is the same... critical thinking abt human issues. A psychologist can learn from a sociologist; and a sociologist can learn from an economist. The categories are more for convenience sake.... all the disciplines are fundamentally the same.

Though i know i need to read widely, its not easy to do so... esp when i start work... think it will be even more difficult.

Lesson---- try to cultivate a habit of reading widely now.

  Nature

最重要的就是看清楚事情的本质

this is something which i learn from comics......

It mean tt its more impt to see the "true nature" of the matter.

And i apply this principle to a lot of things in life.

When i in an arguement, i try to deal with the actual issues at hand, and not let my emotions and pride get involved.

When i look at someone's actions, i try to emphasize on his intentions, rather than the outcome of the situation.

When i look at the problem, i tend to narrow down to the single most impt aspect of the prob.

It seems tt something is in some trouble right now..... there are various aspects to the prob..... but if u were let me to decide, i will say tt the most impt factor is the lack of spirit.

The spirit has been the most impt pulling factor. And it should remain so.

Other things are impt too.... but i feel that the main prob is the spirit, rather than the form.

  辣兄辣妹

Haha... another entry abt tv serial.....

Yeah! its Jing Jing! haha, saw parts of 1st and 2nd episode. THink that her acting skills are really good.... she should be able to go far.

As for Tay Ping Hui.... eh..... dunno leh, after all the tv serials, i juz feel that he havent really improve on his acting skills. His character feels the same in every other serials.

Anyway, Ping Hui and Jing Jing are siblings. And they will have a r/s in the drama..... woah... incest leh.....

Speaking of incest, i remember a comic which deals abt a r/s between the father and the daughter. The father is not the biological father but the guardian of the girl, when the girl's mother died. The girl began to like her "father" (they are 30 yrs apart in age). The way the comic depict the r/s, the kind of love between them is not as forbidden as it looks.

Which reminds me something which my tutor said during a debate in SC1101 abt gay love.

"If loving someone, only abt sex? No... most will argue tt pure love should not include sexual feelings. If tts the case, then shouldnt gay love be condone? Since love is not abt sex, then there's nothing wrong bet 2 individuals loving each other.... and being homosexual, the issue abt sex is less prominent among heterosexual"

Hmmm... if love is really all encompassing, then shouldnt we allow those kind of taboo or incestous r/s?

I dunno... it goes against all my natural instincts.... yet if i go by this argument, and the assumption tt love is all encompassing and without boundaries, i unable to refute tt statement.

  頂天立地

Tend to watch more tv in the exam period... haha, which is strange becos i usually dun watch tv.... i guess its becos i need some relaxation, or excuse to stop studying... =P

anyway, been catching the re-run of 頂天立地. Hmm..... i was glued to it.... partly becos of chow cher meng. He was really cunning and scheming in the show. And always under the guise as someone who was righteous.

And Guo Hui also acted well. He played the role as a gangster, who was willing to rob and murder, yet in a 光明正大way. U know tt if he likes u, he likes u.... he wont backstab u.

I was wondering.... if circumstances were to force me to become a "bad" person, i think i would rather be Guo Hui. Maybe becos at least he act with a certain code of honour.

In this world, i think there are more 奸人 than 壞人。 And the 奸人 is way more dangerous than the 壞人.

  Terrorism

Mr Lee Hsien Loong said Singapore was a target because of the millions of Western tourists who visit and the many US and other multinational companies here.

'Singapore is being targeted not for what we did, but for who we are,' he said.

'And so long as we remain who we are - a secular society that stands for modernity and progress - we will offend their fundamentalist beliefs and be a target.'

Report from "JI leader's words show threat is alive"

The words by DPM Lee, that Singapore is being targeted not for what we did, but for who we, are rings a bell to the situation in Spain.

Spain recently declared withdrawing the troops out from Iraq, after the Madrid train blasts. The decision echoed the general public sentiment that they want "peace" and not war. The general public was not supportive for the Iraq war in the 1st place, and they perceived the Madrid train blasts as a result of their involvement in the war.

I do not deny the possibility of Spain being targetted by terrorists as a result of their involvement in a war which should not have been waged (which the Spain public feel). I think that their decision to withdraw from a war, which has not, and might never be justified is correct to them.

But, i feel that their timing is wrong. They could have withdraw the troops sometime longer after the tragedy.

By withdrawing their troops so soon after the blasts, its juz prove to the terrorists that they can get whatever they want by bombing buildings, trains...

And even if other countries withdraw their troops, who can say that the terrorists will not bomb their countries? They juz need reasons like "You are not of our (radical) Islamic faith" or "We need the whole world to be converted to our faith".

And really, do we want to forsake who we really are to achieve a "peaceful" truce with the terrorist (if that is even possible)? Thus, i feel that DPM Lee words that "they target us for who we are, and not we do" drives home the pt.

I am not arguing whether the Iraq war is justified or not; I doubt the war would ever be justified. I do not support wars.

But i believe that we should not allow the terrorists to get their way.

  Failings of man

Pride.

Often the failing of man.

I seen ppl who refused to admit that they are wrong, even though they know that they are in the wrong.

I seen ppl who blew their top, becos their pride was "insulted" by some ppl actions or words.

I have always tell myself not to have too much pride. And i think that most of the time i been doing it....

But i juz cant seem to listen to the comments/ suggestions given by them. I not sure whether their suggestions are correct, and credit to me, for thinking very hard abt their comments. But my 1st instinct to myself was "Hey, u 3 didnt even help out with the design, dunno the different tests, didnt read up additional stuff.... how could u be correct???"

And i cant differentiate whether i did think carefully abt their points, or tt i have already dismissed their comments subconsciouslly.

I guess i tend to do tt, when i dun have too much respect for the person. If the person is someone i dun respect, i will tend to dismiss what he/she said....

Sometimes its good, becos it helps me to save time and brain cells... no need to listen to the rubbish by the person.

But sometimes, its bad becos i might truly miss out something impt by them....

Its a fine line to thread.
  Reformative justice or Retributive justice?

Read in the newspaper today, abt a prison rehabitiation system, where the long-term prisoners get to take care of abandoned dogs. And they were reformed by the system, as they "for the 1st time in their life, get to experience the joy of giving without expecting any return". And they were so attached to their dogs that they "cried when the dogs are given away to homes".

Cry? Giving without experience return? something unlikely to hear for a hard core offender.... i felt that it was a good system, as it gives the chance for the long term prisoners to reform, and be a human being. Inflicting punishment on them doesnt help them to become a better person... reform practises will help them to turn over a new leaf.

And in another paper, i read abt a monster father, who raped his own daughter for 9 years. And when the daughter finally told her mom abt it, and the mon went to confront him, he beat her so harshly tt she died. And he juz left her in the bed, and went off. The daugher and the son finally called the police.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment and cane strokes.... yet to me, i felt that was not enugh to atone for his sins. What he did was sooo atrocious, that i think life imprisonment, and captial punishment (when i a bit extreme) is not even fair to the victims. This is the time which i strongly advocate retributive justice.

Conflicting opinion in different situation? yah..... i know....

  The Singapore Dream

Singapore lost!

Singapore Lions (national soccer team) lost 1-2 to Japan.

I was so happy to hear the news from my brother.... becos there was never any doubts that Singapore will lose. It's just by how much goals....

Singapore Pools gave a 3 1/2 goal handicap to Japan; meaning they were expecting Japan to beat Singapore by 3 goals.

But it was only 2-1! And the solitary goal was an equaliser! The impact of an equaliser (to me) is always stronger..... becos u levelled....

And the person who scored the goal was none other than Indra Sahan! The Singapore player who scored the equaliser against Man U, and a goal against Urugruay.

Yesterday morning, i told my bro that i hope that Singapore would scored at least one goal.... and that i hope the person would be Indra. Who best to score except for him? He already had 2 goals to 2 big teams; might as well make it a 3!!

And he did!

And from the news report, Singapore managed to hold Japan up till the 81st minute! My my... wasnt that a good achievement....

A good effort, Singapore Lions. Thats the way to go!

Maybe, just maybe, Goal 2010 might not be impossible anymore.

Nay, it is impossible.... never in 2010 would Singapore be able to go to World Cup.

But hey, yesterday night did make the dream seem more probable isnt it?

And sometimes, the dreaming process is more impt than achieving the dream.
